In the wild, this tree is often found in hedgerows and woodland, but it also makes an excellent garden plant for hedging, mixed borders, or as a small tree or large shrub. It is highly valuable for wildlife and produces edible hazelnuts. Corylus avellana has a moderate growth rate, typically growing 40–60cm per year. Many hazel trees take over 10 years to reach their full height. Although it can grow up to 12m in the wild, it is easy to keep compact with regular pruning. ‘Red Zellernut’ is an attractive variety with decorative deciduous foliage that emerges wine-red before fading to bronze-green. It produces large, good-flavoured nuts and has vigorous growth. As with all cobnuts, ‘Red Zellernut’ requires another cobnut variety or wild hazel nearby for pollination in order to produce nuts. Supplied in a 3 litre pot
